NEW REQUIREMENTS FOR AERIAL LIFT OPERATORS

New ANSI standards affect owners, operators and supervisors of aerial work platforms, which include scissor lifts and boom lifts.
ANSI A92.22 covers the safe use of mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs). Employers are required to develop a risk assessment and site safety plan for the safe operation of their mobile elevating work platforms. ANSI A92.24 covers updated training requirements for MEWP operators, occupants, and supervisors.
Mobile elevating work platforms that move vertically but stay inside the tipping lines, such as a scissor lift.
NEW MEWP CLASSIFICATIONS, GROUPS AND TYPES
Mobile elevating work platforms that extend past the machine's chassis, such as a boom lift.
Group A or B MEWPs that can only be operated in the stowed position
Group A or B MEWPs that can be operated in the elevated position but controlled from the chassis
Group A or B MEWPs that can be operated but controlled from the work platform
Under the new ANSI standards, aerial work platforms are now classified as mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs).
